Chemical & Bacterial Treatment

Short answer: Chemical (bacterial/enzyme) treatment adds beneficial bacteria or enzymes to a septic or cesspool system to help maintain the natural breakdown of waste between pump-outs. It's a maintenance supplement, not a substitute for regular pumping, and it won't fix a system that's already failing structurally.

What it actually does

Septic and cesspool systems rely on naturally occurring bacteria to break down waste. Certain household products — strong disinfectants, antibacterial soaps, bleach used in large quantities, and some drain cleaners — can disrupt that bacterial population over time. Bacterial/enzyme treatments reintroduce beneficial bacteria and enzymes to help keep that breakdown process working as intended between scheduled pump-outs.

What it won't do

Treatments are a maintenance supplement, not a repair. They won't reverse a saturated leach field, seal a cracked cesspool wall, or eliminate the need for regular pumping. If you're noticing any of the symptoms on our signs of failure page, that calls for a pump-out and likely an inspection, not a chemical treatment.

When it's genuinely useful

• As part of a regular maintenance routine between pump-outs, especially in households that use a lot of antibacterial or disinfecting products
• After a pump-out, to help re-establish a healthy bacterial balance in the tank or cesspool

Be skeptical of any product or service claiming a chemical treatment can replace pumping entirely — solids still accumulate physically regardless of bacterial activity, and eventually still need to be physically removed.
